Brugge, The Kingdom of Belgium

Brugge

The best way to start the day: Belgian waffles with chocolate sauce and strawberries. We caught the early train to another small town in Belgium, Brugge which is a tourist destination. It was a flourishing town with a port but in the 1600’s silt began gathering in the canals and soon its port was deserted and was left redundant. It is now a simple tourist town and is famous for its old architecture of churches and town building. What made my day was that we saw the first Santro in a foreign country!

Brugge is famous for its lace making industry with which retired men and women can once again earn money. It is also famous for its fries and we even visited a fries’ museum showing us step by step how it started and how it’s made, right from potatoes up to the golden crisps we call fries.

In the middle of the town square was a huge, old clock tower which hadn’t lost its chime. Every hour the noise of the church bells ringing ran through the streets throughout the city. On special days there is also an expert organ player who performs a live show every hour and plays it with everything he has got.

Another thing that Brugge is famous for is its church containing the holy vial of blood of Jesus Christ. The tourist population amasses here to see this old historic artifact of the Lord. As soon as we left the sanctuary of the church we were caught in the rain and ran back to the station to catch the train to Brussels central.

We began packing our bags as we had an early morning ahead of us.
